This is not London Bridge!!!
Most people see the above bridge and immediately think its the bridge in the nursery rhyme. I am here to set you free from this misconception. It is not. The London Bridge that was falling down is actually not in London anymore it was moved to Arizona. Yeah, they physically picked it up and moved it 6000 or so miles to Arizona. Also from my understanding the song was not written about that bridge either. Its just coincidental the aforementioned bridge in Arizona was on the verge of collapse before it was moved to Arizona. The bridge pictured above is the world famous Tower Bridge whose name derives from the Tower of London which is located nearby. This bridge was built in 1894 which makes it just over 100 years old. You may recognize it as the site that displayed the olympic rings in the 2012 summer olympics. In October i had the opportunity to take a trip to london and this bridge was on my list of attractions to tour.
The tour of tower bridge is great. It takes you throughout the bridge and is money well spent. You begin the tour at the base of the left tower, ascend to the top, cross one or both of the horizontal walkways, down the right tower to the base of the structure. There you you can witness, in action, the steam engines that were used to raise the bridge over 100 years ago. I grabbed this shot of the bridge from the bank of the Thames River directly in front of The tower of London.
